Shot Over Training Days

An HPR shot over day is a practical training for Hunt, Point, and Retrieve (HPR) dogs, where live game is involved, and shooting takes place. It’s designed to mimic a real hunting situation but in a controlled and structured way, and a way to practice for Field trials.

What Happens on a Shot Over Day

1. Hunt: You will hunt your HPR in an area for game, such as pheasants, partridges, or grouse.

It should cover the ground efficiently, working systematically while staying in control of the handler.

2. Pointing: When the dog finds game, it should point (pause and indicate the location of the game) rather than chasing or flushing it out too soon. The handler and gun move into position before the next step.

3. Flush and Shot: On command, the dog flushes the game (makes it fly), and the gun takes a shot. If the shot is successful, the bird falls to the ground.

4. Retrieve: The dog is sent to retrieve the shot game and return it to the handler, delivering it gently to hand. A good retrieve is clean, controlled, and without damage to the bird.

5. Steadiness and Control: The dog must remain steady (not running in or chasing after birds without command). It should work calmly and listen to the handler at all times.

Although the above is the ideal scenario but this is a training day and our experienced HPR trainer will be there will you guiding and advising you along the way to achieve you goal, whether that be polishing your technique and partnership or working on a specific issue.

Key Points to Know:

Real Game & Live Shooting: Unlike working tests, real game is used, and a trained gun shoots over the dogs.

Feedback: Our trainer will provide guidance and work with you to get the most from the day.

Levels of Experience: Shot over days are training-focused and are designed to get you ready to field trial or to improve your field trial performance.

Why Take Part?

A shot over day is a fantastic way to see your HPR dog in action, develop their real-world skills, and build teamwork between dog, handler, and gun. Whether you’re training towards field trials or just want to experience working your dog, it’s a rewarding and exciting experience.
